If you’ve spent much time on the Ship Works, you might think we have it in for Star Trek. But nothing could be further from the truth. It’s true that the later entries in that wildly successful franchise were, shall we say, less than compelling. But many of the shows to bear the Star Trek moniker were pretty darned good; some were even ground-breaking.
Perhaps the most under-appreciated entry in the Trek continuum is Deep Space 9. Certainly, it was the most Firefly-like of the series, with it’s broken-down space station and darker mien. DS9 is my favorite ST spinoff, beating out even the venerable Next Generation, which was a little too antiseptic, characters a little too pristine and set design a little “Erte” for my tastes.
At the center of DS9 was, not surprisingly, the Deep Space 9 space station. Alien-built and turned over to it’s human masters as part of a treaty, DS9 was without a doubt the least Trek-like of any space-based vessel to fly a Federation flag. Heck, it didn’t even move (well, not very often, at least).
And it must have been a real challenge to design, with it’s curving pylons and blocky ring that look less alien than it does steam punk. It must be an equally challenging replica to create, so – no surprise – The FX Company made one:

I always loved that station myself.
Any idea how big the model is?
Hi there Michael – I think it’s ~20″ across, but I’d need to confirm that with FX to be sure. And right now they’re *real* busy building Raiders
of the Lost Ark?
Riiiight.
That’s amazing! I have always had a soft spot for DS9 and her sister station. It’s incredible how The FX Company can breathe 3d sculpted life into such complicated designs that (unless I’m mistaken and if I am someones bound to point it out) only existed in CGI form. I’m not even going to ask the going price of one of these as, no doubt, it was most likely a one off and I would probably have to sell a house much nicer than mine to afford one. Besides I’m saving up for Serenity already.
Neil–
Actually, as an FYI, yes ….
The only major Trek piece done as CGI only was the last, Archer’s NX-01 . All the others, including the Ent-E, had at least one physical miniature model built…including DS9, which was about 8 or 10 feet across.
That’s a beautiful representation of DS9. Another outstanding piece!
