UPDATED: Cerberus: Desert Attack Wallpaper

Hey there all you Core-Techs (just trying the name out to see how it feels), it’s Monday which means it’s time for some shiny FFSW bonus content. Up this week: Our first freebie – Cerberus Desert Attack Wallpaper.

The Independents Space Vehicle Cerberus, a heavily armed and armored gunboat built on the Firefly Series 3 airframe, is pictured starting her attack run on Alliance positions.  The Cerberus’ forward 155mm AGS cannons make short work of Alliance hardpoints at range. As she comes in closer, the front and side 25mm autocannons take out any remaining resistance and the under-wing PGMs (Precision-Guided Munitions) leave nothing but a greasy black smear on the sand.

Just look at this image and imagine Ride of the Valkeries (or Night on Bald Mountain, if you prefer), playing in the background, and you can’t help but get a chill down your spine. And, maybe, feel just a little sorry for those Purple Bellies unlucky enough to be in her path.

Looks like she sure could back up Wash’s “new crater in this little moon” comment with little effort.

Question: is she equipped with shuttles or not?

  2. Steve says:

It looks like the guns may have been replaced with shuttles in later, non-crater-making-capable versions. That’s just what I figure from the location of the cannons.

  3. admin says:

Hi Sh!ny – nope, no shuttles. Those were traded out for the rail guns on the sides (and for more storage for ordinance).

  4. Chris Schultz says:

    Wow, thanks. Well done.

  5. I totally forgot to mention the resolution I run at home, and sure enough, I didn’t ask, so I didn’t get it. It’s 1600 x 1200.

  6. admin says:

Hi Micheal – I’d be happy to make one up for you; unfortunately, the max resolution of the source is 1080p (1920×1080) for HD rendering.

  7. micjwelch says:

Ah, I guess that makes some sense. I’m too used to 3DS Max that’ll do whatever you want, as long as you don’t mind waiting a week for it to render. 1280 x 1024 is easily stretched, so I’m good.

  8. sh!ny says:

Thanks for the explanation. I couldn’t tell if the shuttles were covered, recessed, or missing. Guess there goes the shuttle-as-a-giant-rutting-missle idea.

  9. Akin says:

Wait, so no love for us with 1920×1200? No fair! I don’t want black bars on either side of it!!!

  10. admin says:

Hi Akin – I got lots of love, just no source that’s high enough resolution. Unless Sean feels like doing a 1920×1200 “special” render job. (Which, btw, is no small task. I think you could build a scale replica of the Taj Majal out of sugar cubes quicker ‘n one of these render jobs processes.)

What do you think, Sean? I know you’re out there; I can hear you breathing ;-)

  11. Sean Kennedy says:

    what…me breathe…gasp for breath mostly.

    1920×1200 “special” render job…..
I’ll see what I can do when I get home from work.

BTW: Did you need me at Comicon in July?

  12. admin says:

Hah! I *knew* you were there! ;-)

Need you? I always need you, Sean! Plus, will have goodies. Let me know when you’re at the show and we can meet at the suite.

Oh, and should I talk to MJ about running the Bellflower trailer here on the FFSW? I’m sure the Core-Techs would love to see some of your handiwork ;-)

(Don’t you just love it when people talk like you’re not there?)

  13. Anthony Affrunti says:

Oooh, this is teriffic! I hope the other render of Cerberus landed will become a wallpaper too. :D

  14. Akin says:

Be sure and stop by the California Browncoats booth! I’ll be working there…

  15. Sean Kennedy says:

OK. I was able to re-sample and re-scale the 1920×1080 image to 1920×1200. I sent it to you via e-mail, so you can logo it and post it. :D

Comicon: Not sure yet what day I will be there. I will have to check and seee what my work schedule will be like.

Yes. MJ would love if the Bellflower teaser could be run. I don’t have a copy of the one Bently mastered for Serenity LA convention (with the fancy menu), but I do have the trailer and the set walk-though on DVD. I also have a box of Bellflower buttons. LOTS of them….

  16. admin says:

Only because we love you guys: post updated with 1600×1200 and 1920×1200 images.
    ;-)

    Thanks, Sean!

  17. Akin says:

    Awesome! Thanks, guys!

  18. Akin says:

Ya know… something along these lines might make a right shiny poster…

  19. Jim in St. Louis says:

The Cerberus Wallpaper looks great on my laptop! I can’t wait to put it on my work computer tomorrow. Thanks Andy and Sean! That is once cool ship. Really looking forward to the poster set. I love how the bridge windows are covered with armor leaving only the slits. Really looks like it would do a fine job of protecting the pilots.

    Nice work guys!

    jim

  20. Akin says:

BC1 just planted an idea over on the 76th Independent Battalion forums… are you, by any chance, going to sell a gunboat variant as well?

  21. admin says:

Hey there Akin – it’s certainly something we’re going to look at. But whether we’d do her as an 18-inch replica, or maybe something smaller, remains to be seen, as well as when we might do it.

BTW, you were absolutely right about Kaylee’s parasol. Didn’t realize we’d used the wrong images. It’s been fixed since then: http://www.qmxonline.com/shiny.

    Thanks!

  22. vFireFLyBC says:

Nice to see the work coming along so well.

Was just asked about some of Sean Kennedy ‘s work and the reference to this type of FireFLy and its history in the verse. Was nice to be able to point out the real authors and artists. Enjoy the contuneation of storyline possibilities as well, from our crew – thanks.
