Death From Above

A while back someone asked if we planned on making Cerberus/12th Cavalry patches. I don’t remember precisely who asked, but it got me thinking how cool it would be to have some patches.

That, of course, got me asking Geoff Mandel how he’d feel about designing a logo for the 12th. Geoff, once again showing his unwavering support of the Browncoat community and All Things Serenity, went to work and came up with this awesome military shoulder patch:

Here’s what I’m thinking – First, the Cerberus t-shirt now has to have the 12th Cavalry logo on the back, don’t you think? And, we gotta have patches, at least with the 12th Cavalry logo on them and maybe one with the Cerberus logo as well. Patches will probably run about $9.95 and t-shirts (with front and back printing), will be $19.95 for M-XL and $22.95 for XXL.

So, what do you think? You like the new logo? Want it on the back of the Cerberus t-shirt? Want some 12th Cavalry patches? Are you okay with those prices? Post your comments and let me know!

what size are you thinking for the patches? Shoulder-sized or back-sized? Logo looks good!

That’s the shiniest thing I’ve heard all day!!! Please make the t-shirts and patches! I’ll take 2 of each!

Thanks, Pete! Yeah, I was *really* excited when I got this from Geoff. Of course, any e-mail from Geoff is like Christmas morning around here ;-)

Matthew: The patches would be shoulder-size, about 2.5 inches. On the back of the t-shirt it would be full-sized (across the back) so, maybe, 10 inches? (BTW, love your Gravatar!)

    Wow, looks good.

Love the patch, will have to get one for my husband and my Dad too, so that’s at least three. If there is a Cerebus patch as well, that will make six total! Are you fellas considering making womens t-shirts? Ya know, something a bit less boxy?
Definitely love the the logo on the back idea.

  6. JimK says:

I’d buy two shirts…if they came in 3x also. ;)

I’m at the gym 4 times a week and I’ve lose 100 pounds, but I’m still too big for a 2x. Hook a fat brotha up!

  7. keelhualer says:

In for at least two patches and two shirts!

Can I ask what may be a stupid question? Why are you going with a black star? I thought the star was blue?

Hey there Keelhauler – When he worked on Serenity, Geoff Mandel “upgraded” a bunch of the logo designs from the series for the movie (Blue Sun, the Alliance, etc.) the Independents logo was the only one he didn’t do, and so when this project came around, we were thrilled he was willing to give it the “Serenity” treatment.

I think Geoff was shooting to make the logo look a little more intimidating – by all accounts, the Independents gave the Alliance a run for their money during the war, their logo should reflect a bit more of that fierceness.

Hey there JimK – congratulations! That’s an impressive achievement! I’ll check with our shirt manufacturer and see if he goes to 2x. If he does, rest assured we’ll put two aside for you.

Put me down for a couple of shirts and some patches…

  11. Hawkehunt says:

Count me in too, for both shirts (XXL) and patches. They look ruttin’ awesome!

  12. William Pace says:

Patch, shirt…I’ll even take it on a lunchbox. You name the day, I’ll bring the cash. Too bad they aren’t already done or I’d order a stack for the CSTS screening on Wednesday.

  13. lovemunkey187 says:

    2xl shirt defiantly.
Patches? not sure. I’ll have a thunk and get back to you, ok?

I’ll be good for two or three of the patches.
I’m glad to see Geoff going with the original orientation of the Independence emblem.

The patches were originally intended to denote rank and have the triangle point down and the star upright.
But in the rush of television production work,
a seamstress sewed the patch on “upside-down”.
The 76th and a number of fans follow “canon” from the “Serenity” TV pilot and “The Message” which showed the patch on Mal’s arm the way the seamstress messed up.
But also seen in the “Serenity” pilot is the orientation of the rank authorization info on the back, as the designer intended it.

The design intention was to have Alliance triangles point up; Independents’ triangles point down.
And, believe it or not, one of the Alliance patches got put on reversed in Serenity on one of the Alliance motocross troopers’ uniforms!
The Propstore of London also displayed one of the throat patches from the movie “Serenity upside down, but that REALLY doesn’t count.

To me, the original designers’ intentions (both Shawna and Geoff)
are more “canon” and logical than a rushed line production foul-up.

I know this seems like nit-picking, but adherence to details like these are the things that often lend credibility to a fictional world.
How believable would a World War Two movie be if some of the American sergeants stripes pointed one way, some the other, the German swastikas were backwards and some, but not all, of the deaths heads were upside down?

So, yes, diggin’ the emblem on a patch!

    Mike

  15. Yes to two patches and tees each. I am so there. I know this might not be doable, but could you possibly swing a tank top, too? It’d look mighty fine on us girl mechanics and I’d buy two of the tanks, as well.

And thank you for settling the orientation controversy. I’ve always been a point-down/star-up supporter and I’m glad to see QMX is, too. Having the star pointing down just seemed wrong, like hanging your flag upside down to indicate distress. We Browncoats may have lost the War, be we’re not going to lie down and signal distress, no sir.

  16. steven garduno says:

I love this design and can’t for you to come out with the the t-shirt. Also this site I just love. QMX you guys are always doing a great job.

  17. Neil Mathews says:

Outstanding work! For now I’m up for a t-shirt and I’ll be after a patch just as soon as I get my very own browncoat from Abbyshot. It’ll look great on the shoulder!
