The Zen of Firefly Building: The Reactor Base

So, you guys getting tired of this yet? All the minutiae, all the micro-analysis of every little detail in Serenity’s hull? No? Well, this week’s update pushes the boundaries of tiny, little detail-gazing even further, as we continue our look at the development of the Firefly’s signature feature – the reactor.

In fact, this week’s update focuses on just one piece of the reactor – the reactor’s base ring. As the Zen of Model Making says, “The most important details are the ones you never see.” So, I guess putting all this work into one fairly minor segment of Serenity is the properly Zen thing to do.

But whether you consider it Zen or just neurotic, this week’s update should satisfy any Core-Tech’s complusion for detail:

Start with a sculpted piece of REN Shape…

…and then form it into a ring.

Next, cut a whole bunch of little, tiny grilles…

…then attach your grille work to the ring.

Cut slots for the next level of greeblies…

…and add the final greeblie bits…

…to make a perfect Firefly reactor ring!

The reactor base looks great Andy. What is the grill material, styrene sheet? The grill cuts look very accurate. What process did you use to make the cutouts? I love all the greeblies!

    Oh, now that’s just shiny.

I’d say Zen and neuroses are two sides of the same coin. That said, the little esoteric pieces like this just makes you appreciate how much goes into not only the in-universe design of the boat, but the real world construction of the set.

    To Serenity’s Sculptor,

Having worked in the holography industry, I empathize with you as a sculptor. The requirements of exacting detail can make a good sculptor go blind, mad or both. It certainly doesn’t help to add on the pressure of thousands of scrutinizing fans, all critiquing your work daily down to the minutest details. I’m not sure what compliments I could add regarding the reactor base ring, except to say that I empathize with the effort and admire the work.

Wow. Don’t know what else to say. Wow.
