Reaction Control Tower

Once again the folks who frequent the FFSW showed their true metal – and exhaustive knowledge of Firefly design – by Naming That Part in under an hour: The support strut under the Reaction Control Tower. That’s the hump-like structure that sits on top of the reactor all the way to the back of Serenity.

So, with today’s update, we reveal the rest of the Reaction Control Tower in all it’s glory. After, of course, congratulating Micheal J. Welch, a frequent contributor to the FFSW’s article comments, for being the first to post the correct answer. Your Mal tags will be on their way shortly, Michael!

Meanwhile, I must hatch an even more nefarious plan to stump you FFSWers. Or maybe that should be FFSWites? Or Fireflies-on-the-wall? Or how about Kaylee’s Corps? Hmmm. Okay, before I hatch a more nefarious plan, we really need to come up with a nickname for FFSW regulars. Any suggestions?

From the top – notice all the pressure release valves and other “greeblies”.

Hey it’s that thing that I didn’t know what it was. I’m not good at guessing games. It was fun though. Next time I will pull my blueprints out. Reference photos just don’t cut it.

As for the nick name… lightning bugs?

    Keep up the good work.

I have an idea for a more nefarious plan.

All nefarious plans should be e-mailed to: admin@fireflyshipworks.com.

One of your talented graphic artists could even design a logo or patch.

    Nefarious Plan sent sir…. >:)

  6. William Pace says:

Well, since the Firefly ships were constructed on Hera, we could call ourselves…

    …wait for it…

    …Heratics.

Sean – got the plan. Will execute…soon…

William – “Thank you, thank you, ladies and gentlemen. I’ll be here all week…”
    :D

  8. sh!ny says:

Racking my brains trying to come up with something but I don’t think I’m gonna top Heratics. Well done, sir.

  9. William Pace says:

You just like being called a heretic…

    …but who doesn’t?

  10. Jim in St. Louis says:

The RC Tower looks great Andy. I don’t think we have ever had such a detailed view of this part of the ship. It’s not really something they ever focused on in the movie. And as good as the B/P set is, you don’t really get a feel for all the intricate little nooks and crannies.

    Keep em comin!

I was thinking of calling us “Squints”, from the expression permanently cut into our faces from thousands of hours we’ve all spent scrutinizing blueprints, film footage and wireframes. But then, I understand that’s already been taken ;-)

  12. admin says:

Jim – Thanks for the kind words and, as much as I love the blueprints, I agree they are a poor substitute for holding the real thing in your hands. And I can’t give enough credit to our sculptor, who has exceeded my unreasonably high expectations every step of the way!

I’ve always been partial to The Radion Accelerator Corps. But that doesn’t easily truncate into something adorable, does it?

Hm. Perhaps “Core – Techs”? Nah.

How about “Gurstlers?” It’s obscure, it’s techie (” …six Gurstler’s crammed right under every cooling drive so that you strain your primary artery function…”) and it kinda fits. I bet folks are straining plenty of arteries trying to figure out what each piece is, and where it’s crammed.

  14. William Pace says:

Ohhh, I like Core-Techs. That goes to the top of my list.

  15. William Pace says:

In hindsight I should have spelled my suggestion ‘Hera-Techs’. Pallete gets the pony and plastic rocket.

  16. chris says:

Just curious as to the scale of the final product? Or more particularly, the size of the finished replica? Any hints? Didn’t see the question asked in any of the other comments, but admittedly, I didn’t read each one. Thanks!

  17. admin says:

Hi Chris – welcome to the Ship Works! The Serenity Artisan replica will be 1/180 scale, or 18 inches bow to stern.

  18. Therese says:

Haven’t posted in, well, quite a while. Very shiny work fellas. I am saving my coins for this beauty.
As for names, wow, both Core-Techs and Hera-Techs are terrific! Will there be a vote?!
