Mal's Most Favorite Gun

I’m sorry to report we have no new Serenity photos for you this week; the sculptor has been very, very busy on the parts integration process and getting things like the gravity rotor just so, which didn’t leave a lot of time for new pics. Rest assured, we’ll have more for you soon.

Meanwhile, I thought you might like to see some never-before-released footage of the Mal pistol in action. And when I say “Mal pistol”, I mean the Mal pistol – the hero prop Nathan Fillion used in Serenity.

The folks at ISS, the company that upgraded the TV pistol for the movie, were nice enough to give us a guided tour of this amazing firearm (yes, it really does fire) – up close and on camera – and I thought, only seems right to share it with you Core-Techs.

The video goes into great detail on the construction and function of the pistol, including all the mods that were made for the movie. Only one sad note – because they did modify the TV hero prop, the Firefly version of the Mal no longer exists except in notes, photos, castings and replacement parts.

I know this is a little off-topic, so if you’d rather the Ship Works stay strictly focused on Serenity, let me know. However, sooner or later the Serenity replica will ship, and I’m kind of hoping to keep the FFSW going, but broaden it’s mission to encompass all Firefly and Serenity props, plus the development of new “extended ‘Verse” goodies. If you like that idea, be sure to let me know.

Wow, how interesting to see the real workings of Mal’s little lifesaver! Thanks for posting the video. And hey, if there is no new Serenity model news little stuff like this is always cool to see. Thanks!

  2. So this is a preview of what’s coming after you’re done with the ship? I can totally go for that.

  3. Chris Schultz says:

    Keep FFSW going!

The other stuff is not a distraction.

  4. admin says:

Thanks, Chris! I certainly plan to ;-)

Michael – I can’t say if or when a replica of this pistol would happen, or if it would be as spiffy as the screen-used. Honestly, to make it this shiny would be expensive, and we could never include things like a real revolver inside. But it’s definitely something we’re exploring (and as you all learned from Serenity, sometimes those explorations take a loooong time.)

    FFSW must continue! >:-D

    Thanks for the video!

Definitely keep FFSW going! Expand it!! Don’t stop ’till you’ve run out of “‘verse goodies” to make!!!

I support any content that shares the pictures and files you guys have collected in your research. In your interviews on The Signal you mentioned that you’ve collected hundreds of photos of all kinds of things, and I would be grateful to see any of that.

  8. admin says:

Hey there Donnovan – that won’t be a problem. We probably have the largest collection of set photos outside the studio themselves, for example. In fact, as some of the images in our collection were donated by former crew, we might even have a shot or two the studio doesn’t have ;-)

    That was freakin’ sweet!

Thank you so much for sharing that. As a movie prop fan, I am very appreciative.

I hope you guys took the time to film little shorts about the rest of the firearms while you were there – River’s bar gun, the mare’s leg and the elusive Wash pistol.

    Videos… maybe. Pictures… oh yes!
    :)

  11. Akin says:

I’ve hated you guys ever since you told me about how you got to play with it, back at the B3… now I hate you even more! Damn you! :-p

What if we provide our own revolver, can you mod it for us?

  12. admin says:

Hey there Scott – don’t hold back, tell us what you *really* think ;-)

The problem isn’t modding a casting, it’s the casting itself. Finding a professional-level bronze caster, especially in the U.S., has proven darned near impossible. The couple of people who still do it want a lot of money to reproduce a piece like this – we’re talking tens of thousands.
    :(

My muscular buttocks this place should stop, after I’ve got my grubby little paws on my very own Serenity.

Keep the truth of the signal out there for us all.

  14. Off-Topic? Refrain from doing more along this vein in the future? What are you, nuts? OF COURSE, please give us more. After all, this is *Firefly* Ship Works, and by my reckoning anything involved with Firefly is all good. Articles, pictures, vids, products we can buy—please don’t stop making these.

    Must…have…more…!

    *ahem*

Please. If it’s not too much trouble. ^_^
