> FX Friday: The Wrath of Khan [Data Source: admin]
Moving along the Star Trek timeline (at some point we’ll circle back to the TOS Enterprise), this week’s FX Friday is focused on The FX Company’s build of the U.S.S. Reliant, the hijacked starship that thoroughly kicked the Enterprise’s butt in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Based on the DeBoer/Northstar kit, the Reliant is 36 inches long, which makes it roughly the same size (although a much larger scale at 1/250) as the Enterprise Refit we featured last week. And, yes, before you ask, The FX Company does a battle-damaged version of the Refit, complete with phaser burns and “sparking” battle damage to match. (If you’d like to see the Refit ala Khan, let me know and I’ll post images of that version next week).
This week we also included several shots with the filming armature in place, just so you could see what that looks like. A filming armature is a standard mount used to precisely control positioning when shooting miniatures for movies.
I love this build almost as much as the Refit. It definitely has the most detailed landing bay of any starship model I’ve seen. Unfortunately, the complexity and expense of the DeBoer kit means a commissioned Reliant runs around $7,000.
At least we can all afford to look at the pictures!

Lordy! I sure hope that Serenity will cost significantly less than these admittedly awesome FX Company ships…

While we don’t have final costs yet, I can guarantee you Serenity won’t be $7,000!
We’re working very closely with the sculptor to create a pattern that is both excruciatingly detailed and optimized for the way The FX Company builds ships. We’re hoping to deliver something that offers the unparalleled quality of a custom-made, hand-built model with at least some of the cost savings of a pre-fab replica.
We’ll have to wait a little longer to see how successful we are. But we hope by combining forces, QMx and The FX Company will be able to do Serenity justice without buyers having to take out a second mortgage to afford one. I’m not saying she’ll be cheap, but I am saying she’ll be worth it. At least, that’s the plan.

Man, that docking bay is impressive. Does this lend hope to an opening cargo bay door and detailed inside for Serenity?

Where those little people the cargo bay when she “thoroughly kicked the Enterprise’s butt”? Ahem, I thought not. There was mention of the refit pics coming soon?

I think the people are meant to represent the Reliant’s “pre-Khan” condition
You want the refit? Or the battle-damaged refit ala Khan?
